Bingley and Jane fall in love, though she hides her feelings. While on the other hand, Darcy develops a soft spot for Elizabeth, who having learned of his haughtiness has become cold towards him. When Jane finally gets herself invited to the Bingley mansion at Netherfield for a dinner, she decides to go for it but gets soaked in the rain on her way and falls ill, thus, ends up staying at the Bingley house.

Elizabeth goes to her sister to nurse her and bring her back and there she meets Darcy who pays her undue attention which makes Caroline Bingley jealous of her. Back at home enters Mr. Collins, the cousin of Bennet who is going to inherit the estate after Mr. Bennet’s death, since the family has no son. He has his eyes on Elizabeth and wants to marry her. As for Jane, she’s waiting for Bingley to propose when he suddenly leaves town with her heart broken. Elizabeth goes to meet her friend Charlotte, where she’s invited by Lady Catherine de Bourgh, and ends up meeting Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam, his cousin on the visit. She’s incensed to find out that Darcy indeed ruined her sister’s relationship with Bingley. So when Darcy who has fallen for Elizabeth proposes to her, she deliberately refuses.

Meanwhile, Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister gets herself involved with a charming man, Mr. Wickham, who claims to be a friend of Darcy. Darcy in order to apologize to Elizabeth for his behavior also tells Elizabeth about Wickham, saying that he is a man of no morals as he tried to elope with his sister. A few months later, Elizabeth with her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner visits Derbyshire. There they go to Pemberley, Darcy’s estate, where the housekeeper recounts his childhood and tell them what a fine man he is.

This time Elizabeth and Darcy get along well, whereas, things back at Longbourn get bad as Lydia elopes with Wickham, only to discover that he does not plan on marrying her. Darcy rescues the Bennets from shame by persuading Wickham to marry Lydia, saving their family honor. A few months after the incident, Darcy and Bingley come to Longbourn, and Bingley proposes to Jane and they get married.

Shortly afterwards, Lady Catherine comes to Longbourn too as she has heard rumors about Darcy proposing to Elizabeth. Since she wants her own daughter, Anne, to get married to him, she tries to intimidate Elizabeth to refuse the proposal. Elizabeth does not bend to her demands, so Lady Catherine tries to bad mouth her by telling Darcy what a headstrong woman she is. This convinces him that Elizabeth might have some feelings for him so he proposes to her once again and she accepts.

At the end, Elizabeth and Darcy raise a toast to their wedding and settle down in Pemberley, and their’s is a happily ever after story and so is Jane and Bingley’s. Lydia with her husband carries on with their irresponsible ways; therefore, both the sisters try to teach Kitty, their younger sibling to not follow in the footsteps of Lydia. Elizabeth remains close to her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner and becomes good friends with Georgiana, Darcy’s sister.

Life progresses for Meursault and he becomes friendly with his acquaintance and neighbor, Raymond, who is a pimp. He helps Raymond plan revenge for his Moorish mistress for her unfaithfulness by writing a letter inviting her to come over so that his friend could beat her up for her infidelities. Consequently, the girl shows up and gets assaulted by Raymond all because Meursault had shown utter apathy towards the fact that she could get hurt.

After the scenario, Raymond gets friendlier with Meursault and starts calling him his close buddy. The brother of that girl with a few other Arabs starts following Raymond around to avenge his sister’s abuse. Meanwhile, Raymond invites Meursault and Marie to his friend’s beach house, which they both accept and attend for a day. Turns out the Arabs have pursued them, and a confrontation takes place on the beach where the Arabs wound Raymond with a knife.

Later that day, Meursault goes for a walk on the beach alone and the Arab flashes a knife at him this time. Meursault having taken Raymond’s gun in order to stop him from killing them ends up shooting the Arab dead. He accounts all this to his being disoriented and on the brink of a severe heatstroke.

Meursault is incarcerated for the murder and a trial begins. In the interim of the trial he gets comfortable with prison life because of his general detachment with everything. His impassiveness is seen as lack of guilt and remorse by the prosecuting attorney, who leaves no way of incriminating him on the basis of being immoral at heart.

The prosecution establishes that Meursault is a soulless criminal who is devoid of any guilt over his actions and that he expresses no feelings for his fellow beings and thus should be severely punished. The prosecutor builds up his case very strongly in front of the jury by straining on the facts that how after his mother’s death Meursault remained so calm and started a relationship with a girl just after. He also goes on to say how he is friends with a pimp who battered his girlfriend and later Meursault killed the same girl’s brother. He asks for Meursault to publically decapitated.

The defendant is sentenced accordingly and sent back to prison, where he makes an appeal but due to his passivity, it is expected to be turned down because the jury believes that he has murdered in cold blood. In his final days at prison, Meursault reflects over his life and realizes that he has no feelings whatsoever for anyone, he’s absolutely isolated and without any compunction and conscience. He even comes to term with his pending execution. He rebuffs religion and God, and tells the prison’s priest to leave him alone too. It dawns upon him that his life has been meaningless and that now he wants freedom from it.

Ellen recounts the life story of Heathcliff by telling Lockwood that he was brought by Mr. Earnshaw from Liverpool, and given shelter. Heathcliff was a gypsy orphan who earned the favor of Mr. Earnshaw by his pure defenselessness at first. Later the man grows to love him as his own because of his subservient manner.

Following Mr. Earnshaw’s death, Heathcliff is repeatedly mistreated and abused by old Earnshaw’s son and Catherine’s brother, Hindley. Heathcliff grows to detest Hindley because of his cruelties and swears retribution upon him. Throughout HIS childhood and adolescence, he has only one friend, Catherine. Until they come across the Lintons.

As the story unfolds, Edgar Linton falls in love with Catherine. The Linton family disdains Heathcliff because of his savage mannerisms. Eventually, Edgar proposes Catherine and she agrees. Only to tell Ellen that in reality she is in love with Heathcliff but since she can’t marry him because he has no wealth and social standing, she will marry Linton to help Heathcliff out.

Heathcliff hears the part that she wants to marry Linton runs away from home and doesn’t return until three years later. Catherine is devastated but by the time he comes back she is married to Edgar. Heathcliff comes back a changed man; he is refined, educated and extremely rich now.

Isabella, Edgar’s sister falls in love with Heathcliff, and he to take revenge from Linton for ruining his life marries her but not without disturbing Catherine and Edgar’s happy life. Meanwhile, Heathcliff stays at Wuthering Heights with Hindley, his sworn enemy. He makes him pay back by spoiling his kid, Hareton, and lets him slip into further ruin by making him gamble out his wealth.

Hindley ends up miserable and indebted, with his wife, Frances, long dead and his child alien to him, he soon lands on his death bed. Shortly after Heathcliff’s marriage, Catherine gives birth to her and Edgar’s daughter, Cathy and dies as well. Followed by his sister’s death, Hindley dies six months down the road, leaving Heathcliff the owner of Wuthering Heights.

After Catherine’s death, Heathcliff resolves to destroy everything that Edgar cherishes. Soon enough Isabella gives birth to a baby boy, named Linton. Heathcliff takes his son to Wuthering Heights and lives there. He comes into the possession of Thrushcross Grange as well upon the death of Edgar.

Cathy is forcibly married to Linton, who dies after a few years, leaving her a young widow. She has nowhere to go now so she stays with Heathcliff and bears the brunt of his vehemence. This is where Lockwood has come in to the story. Not before long, Lockwood returns to southern England.

When Lockwood comes back eight months later, he finds that Heathcliff has finally been united in death with his soul mate, Catherine, after a lifetime of being haunted by her. The novel comes to a close with Ellen telling Lockwood that Cathy and Hareton are planning to get married.
